Palermo
Palermo today
Modern
Walking through Palermo you will see the thousand faces of a city and cradle of ancient civilizations that have left permanent signs of their passage: one after another, each inheriting the artistic and cultural wealth of the previous one and making Palermo a multifaceted city. Arab domes, baroque facades, Art Nouveau palaces, Norman castles, English gardens, a mingling of styles and histories that make the Sicilian capital highly fascinating. And as the various historical periods coexist side by side, likewise the aristocratic spirit, of the princes and barons described in the novel by Tomasi di Lampedusa blend with the popular and perhaps folkloric spirit of the markets and quarters, depicted in several famous paintings by Guttuso. Making its identity even more complex is that particular blend of sacred and profane, where the fervent religiousness, seen by the many churches of the various religious orders, combines with age-old popular traditions. An example of this is the scenographic Feast of Saint Rosalia held every year in July in honor of the patron saint, An emblem of charm and mystery that has enchanted writers like Goethe, for many years Palermo has also been a symbol of neglect and indifference; a condition from which the city founded by the Phoenicians is now arising, to regain possession of itself. And if the reopening of Teatro Massimo and recovery of the area of the Church of the Spasimo are no longer a novelty, it is necessary to enter the alleys of the historic center, also in the evening, to find the signs of a new rebirth that begins in the small abandoned cloisters which become elegant restaurants, or in the old warehouses that become multipurpose places, like the Cantieri Culturali of the Zisa. Old buildings are returned to the public, like Palazzo Ziino which after being restored is now the seat of exhibitions and a multimedia center, and the seaside on of the most fascinating gulfs of the Mediterranean regains its dignity with its beautiful promenade
