TORGIANO AND THE WINE MUSEUM
The first stop on the tour is the village of Torgiano, instantly recognisable because of the old tower in its mediaeval centre. The surrounding vineyards are planted to various grapes: Trebbiano Toscano, Grechetto, Malvasia, Malvasia di Candia, Sangiovese and Canaiolo, which go into the composition of the area's traditional wines. Recent years have also seen the introduction of Chardonnay, Pinot Nero, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet Sauvignon and Riesling Italico, which have widened the range of possible production. Torgiano has a special place in the history of Italian wine because of the Wine Museum (Museo del Vino), and because of the Banco d'Assaggio wine competition it holds every year to find the best wines at a national level. If you visit the Museum, it's also worth visiting the Osteria del Museo next-door, where various local gastronomic products can be sampled and purchased.
