The green heart of Cilento
You arrive there, the atmosphere of the place, its millenary traditions, and you cannot help but ask yourself why this land is so little celebrated by tourist routes. It has very little to envy to the most renowned localities of Campania. Yet very few know its beauties. Probably it is quite this that gives to it a special charm and an uncontaminated look. Since 1991 the National Park was formed; it is the second Italian park as to extension and the most important amongst the parks that border on the Mediterranean Sea. This corner of Campania, inclusive of the Policastro Gulf and the ranges of the Alburni Mountains, was a meeting and exchange point in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea from very remote times. The continuous contrast of cultures during the centuries characterized its history: the people of Lucania in the interior areas and the coast colonies of Great Greece. The landscape variety of the territory and the richness of natural scenarios are surprising. Coast cliffs that enchanted Greek heroes and philosophers are excavated by wonderful grottoes and over them are built very ancient watchtowers. In the park we find valleys with foamy rivers, which host the most numerous Italian population of otters. In the most wooded ravines, covered mostly by beech, are still hiding some rare Apennine wolves. Massif of calcareous origin host on their slopes medieval villages and magnificent abbeys. These and other attractions, not only of the environment, are exhibited by the Park, which was indeed declared by UNESCO "Cultural landscape".

First Day

Morning
You start from the route of the Alburni Mountains, that stand out impressively with the characteristic stretched out shapes to separate Vallo di Diano from the Calore river valley. The richness of karst phenomena make it an international site. The itinerary goes from the Castelcivita Grottoes, a series of environments adorned with concretions of impressive shapes. Following the path of the old Consular way Capua - Reggio, you'll cross Scorzo and continue, along the Tanagro river, until the site of the Pertosa Grottoes, that are set into a huge cave, about 70 meters away of the river. When the visit is complete you go South-East until the intersection toward Polla, a village clutched on the offshoots of the Alburni, in the spot where they meet the Tanagro river. From here you'll reach San Rufo, clinging over a deep valley with the ruins of the Castle and of the stone portals still visible. The road then goes to the Sentinella Pass, which connects Vallo di Diano with the Calore Valley. Continuing to go along the Alburni you'll reach Corleto Monforte, medieval village of Lucanian origins; only an Angevin style Tower with an urban gate at the side remain. Continuing toward North West you'll get to Sant'Angelo in Fasanella, an old village clutched to a rocky spur, that extend in the karst area at the source of the Auso river. Nearby there is the San Michele Grotto, inhabited since Paleolithic times and interested by a religious settlement dating back to the early-Christian era.

Afternoon
Coming down toward the valley of the Sammaro river, leaving back the Alburni Mountains, you'll find Roscigno Vecchio, an old abandoned village in the Sammaro valley. At the back of the village there is Mount Pruno, called "the balcony of the Alburni Mountains", because of its forward position compared to the massif. Mount Pruno overlooks the Sentinella Pass and the Corticato Mountains. Then in the afternoon a naturalistic excursion to the source of the Sammaro river. Then continue toward Piaggine, a site placed in the area of the greatest naturalistic interest of the Park, between the Calore Valley and Mount Cervati.

Second Day

Morning
You are at Vallo della Lucania, the most important center of the Park, as well as seat of the institute itself. After a brief visit to the little town, move toward Novi Velia for the excursion to Monte Sacro also called Gélbison, destination since the fourteenth century of important pilgrimages from all South Italy; from the terrace of the Presbytery you can see a wonderful panorama of the Cilento Park and of Vallo di Diano. Excursion on Monte Sacro Duration: 1 day Degree of difficulty: Scarce. An ascent of 2 or 4 hors is expected Length: about 3 Km (one way) Description of the route: The itinerary begins near Novi Velia, from the old hydroelectric station on the Torna river. Walking along a path parallel to the river, you will be immerged into a thick forest were the Neapolitan alder prevails together with large chestnut trees. The river, flowing through imposing rocks, from time to time creates spectacular cascades. The path continues on the right side of the deep Caricaturo valley, through a forest of chestnut trees, until you reach a plateau. From here, take the old path, paved with local stones, on which the pilgrims used to walk, before the current road got built. The forest is prevalently made up of fir trees, due to a questionable reforestation, that partly suppressed the autochthonous flora. While you rise, the Neapolitan alders get back their dominion and you can also find small beautiful arbutus clutches. After two hours of walk you'll get to Fiumefreddo, where there is the characteristic spring adorned by an effigy of the Madonna. At this point it is possible to have a typical lunch in a restaurant or in the open air.

Afternoon
From the large square of Fiumefreddo the path becomes steeper. The chestnut trees leave space to a beechwood, that thinning out from time to time offers wide views of the Cilento. The road ends into a little square called Croce di Rofrano, because of the fact that the two pilgrimage paths rising to the mountain crossed here. The first was coming from Novi and interested the people of Cilento on the coast; the second was coming from Rofrano and collected the believers from the interior. On the square there are the so-called "Monti di pietra", stacks of stones let by the pilgrims as a devotion token. When you'll get to the top you can visit the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sacro Monte, founded by the Basil monks in the tenth century. From the square at the top you can see a panorama that embraces almost all the Cilento. In front the Alburni Mountains, the deep Scaloppitti valley that separates Mount Rotondo from Mount Faiatella, and Mount Cervati. In the back the intense blue of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the outline of the promontory of Palinuro. As an alternative the excursion could be done with a comfortable minibus o riding a donkey.

Third Day

Morning
The beauty of the cliffs on the coast that you can see between Palinuro Cape and the Infreschi Coast is unique in all the Mediterranean Sea. And it is not a case that they are part of the myth. The myth that always bound beauty and danger, the fascination of risk and mystery. Land of heroes, philosophers, bandits and patriots, this place is the scene of very old stories. This is the coast where, on the steep cliffs perpendicular to the sea, grows the Palinuri Primula, a unique plant that conquered the limestone walls of this coast. Moving from Palinuro Cape the first stop to do is the Grotta Azzurra. Continuing along the coast the tourist will see the remains of a past where it was the crossroad of many civilizations. Greek settlers, Basil monks, Norman people, Saracens. All of them passed here leaving a sign of their ancient domination. Spectacular is the path of the five towers that adorn the rocky coast. Either you decide to do this route by sea, stopping in the myriad of wonderful inlets, or you decide to walk along the fascinating paths immerged in the Mediterranean scrub; the spectacle will be anyway impressive.

The green heart of Cilento

Afternoon
Continuing toward the Infreschi Coast a series of large gravelly beaches begins, alternated with numerous grottoes very interesting from a naturalistic point of view, specially apt for scuba diving excursions. The most famous of them is the Arco Naturale, at the outlet of the Mingardo river: you can reach it by car following the coast road toward Marina di Camerota, or by boat, sailing round the promontory. Along this last, you can find gorges that can be accessed only by sea: under the ruins of Castle "Molpa" there's the Ossa grotto, full of stalagmites and stalactites, that offered a safe shelter to the prehistoric inhabitants, as witnessed by the finding of animal and human bones. Absolutely to be visited, due to the richness of archeological and scientific materials are the following grottoes: Grotta della Cala, Grotta del Poggio, Grotta Grande di Scario and Riparo del molare di Scario, this last name derived from the work of the grindstones of an oil press that existed here in the eighteenth century.
