The massive Pollino mountain range is situated on the border between Basilicata and Calabria. Dolomite in appearance, it consists mainly of limestone, sandstone and loamy rocks with widespread karstic phenomena and its highest point, at 2,267 m (7,437 ft) is the Serra Dolcedorme, which is in Calabria; other peaks include Mount Pollino at 2,248 m (7,375 ft.) and the Serra del Prete at 2181 m (7,155 ft.). Beech and turkey oak woods, and, on the upper slopes, the Pinus leucodermis tree, as well as valuable types of fauna such as the wolf, the otter and the Italian roebuck are protected within the territory of this National Park, which was first opened in 1989. This area, which stretches beyond regional boundaries and covers 200,000 ha (500,000 acres), is divided in more or less equal halves between Basilicata and Calabria.
